In the design and production process of the transmitter, the overall material used has an important impact on the protection performance and stability of the transmitter. Among the overall materials of the transmitter, stainless steel is the most widely used, and the diaphragm, process connections and housing in the transmitter are all made of stainless steel. Stainless steel, which we often say in colloquial language, not only does not rust, but also has a certain ability to resist acid and alkali corrosion. According to the different corrosion resistance and mechanical strength resistance, it is divided into two grades: 304 and 316.
304 stainless steel is a common material used in transmitter housings and process connections. The transmitter is made of 304 stainless steel, mainly because of its good processing performance and high toughness. 304 stainless steel is widely used in equipment and parts that require good comprehensive properties (corrosion resistance and formability).
Compared with 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel has Mo added to its structure, so its corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance are better. It can be used in more demanding conditions and has superior work hardenability. 316 stainless steel has become almost the standard material in the food and beverage industry. Of course, because of the shortage of molybdenum (Mo) elements, the price of 316L stainless steel is also more expensive than that of 304 stainless steel.
Before we get to know the “L” in stainless steel models, let’s introduce the word “intergranular corrosion”. It refers to the carbides that precipitate from the metal during the process of high-temperature welding. This will affect the stability of the weld, which is not yet discernible from the appearance. This will have certain security risks. In order to prevent the occurrence of intergranular corrosion, the carbide content inside the stainless steel should be reduced, and the stainless steel with this carbide content will be represented by an “L” after the grade, such as 304L stainless steel and 316L stainless steel. The high temperature resistance of stainless steel after carbide reduction has also been greatly improved.
The diaphragm of the transmitter is made of 316L stainless steel. The process connection and housing of the transmitter are generally 304 stainless steel, and 316L stainless steel can also be customized according to customer needs.
